Land trusts are generally not used to protect assets, but the name of the beneficiary is not publicly disclosed. The International Independence Institute (later Institute for Community Economics) was founded in 1967 by Ralph Borsodi to lay the groundwork for a “Gramdan movement for America,” where terrestrial frills were used as the main vehicle. With the support of the Institute, the first African American Experimental CLT was established in 1969 in Albany, Georgia. This non-profit organization called New Communities Inc. has been seen by local civil rights activists as a way to extend the struggle for political rights to the realm of economic rights and economic independence.
